Wichita water quality throughout the years

Now
Then

Today, more than 60% of the drinking water for residents of Wichita is sourced from the Cheney Reservoir. The remaining 40% comes from the Equus beds, an aquifer located in south-central Kansas. Sedgwick County manages Kansas water quality through Wichita Water Works.

Concern has arisen over the amount of water available for those living in Wichita and the surrounding areas. The city has started the Equus Beds Aquifer Storage and Recovery Project to proactively meet future water demands and ensure Wichita water quality meets all necessary standards. Generally, tap water is safe to drink because the Wichita water quality has passed. However, Wichita drinking water is susceptible to contamination from local watersheds because the city uses surface water as its source. Wichita water quality can be affected by agricultural runoff, how wastewater is managed, and industrial operations in the area since its sourced from surface water.

Groundwater contamination was discovered in downtown Wichita in the early 1990s and attributed to unsafe operations by the Apco company. After that contamination was discovered, the city of Wichita had to build a special water treatment facility to clean the site, and this remediation system still operates today, treating over one million gallons of water every day.

Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is located along the Arkansas River near the western edge of the Flint Hills. The surrounding land has supported human habitation since as early as 3000 BC, according to archeological evidence. Natives were drawn to this area where the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers meet.

Over time, Wichita grew due to its location along cattle trails and the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits in the area. As the population grew, so did the need for clean water. The Cheney Reservoir was constructed in the 1960s to supply Wichita with clean water when water from the Arkansas River was determined to be too polluted to be safe.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Wichita get its water?

Wichita sources its drinking water from two primary locations: the Equus Beds Aquifer and Cheney Reservoir. The Equus Beds Aquifer is a significant groundwater source in south-central Kansas, while Cheney Reservoir is a man-made lake that provides additional water supply.

To ensure a sustainable and reliable water source, the city has invested in the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project, which involves recharging the aquifer with treated water from the Arkansas River during periods of high flow. For offices looking for extra protection, a Culligan Quench sparkling water system is a great way to enjoy consistently fresh, clean water.

Is Kansas City tap water safe to drink?

Yes, Kansas City tap water is safe to drink and meets all federal and state safety standards. The city’s water utility, KC Water, conducts continuous monitoring and extensive laboratory testing to ensure the safety of the water, meeting all state and federal drinking water standards.

Even though tap water is safe in Kansas City, using a Culligan Quench filtration system can be a smart way to add an extra layer of safety to your water. The Culligan Quench system helps remove trace contaminants and improves taste, giving you peace of mind with every drink.
