The Research Triangle Region of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill has always had a reputation for innovation. Founded in 1792, Raleigh depended on springs and wells until the city constructed its Water Works complex in 1887. An innovation for its time, the complex drew from Walnut Creek and delivered filtered water to a 2,500,000-gallon holding reservoir – with further elevated storage provided by the Raleigh Water Tower. By the 20th century, the Raleigh water system expanded to cover the entire metropolitan area, though much has now been renovated or decommissioned for historic preservation.
Nearly 25 miles to the north, Durham underwent a similar development throughout much of the 19th and 20th centuries. Incorporated in 1869, Durham established its first water system and treatment plant along the Eno River, the Huckleberry Hill Reservoir, and the Durham Water Company.
Today, the Raleigh and Durham metropolitan areas operate two distinctive systems that deliver water to over 1.8 million residents annually. Both cities face similar challenges in maintaining clean, safe drinking water, including naturally occurring minerals and bacteria that diminish Raleigh – Durham water quality.
According to a recent Durham Water Quality report, the city sources from Lake Michie, Little River Reservoir, Jordan Lake, and Teer Quarry. Water moves from Durham’s supply lakes to its two treatment plants: Williams and Brown. Durham tap water may contain low amounts of runoff from fertilizer use, leaching from septic, and erosion of natural deposits. In addition, corrosion of cast iron household plumbing may contaminate water with lead and copper.
A recent Raleigh Water Quality report demonstrates that drinking water complies with all of the EPA’s drinking water standards. However, northern Raleigh residents sometimes complain of rust-colored tap water, caused by high levels of iron and manganese in the groundwater.
Worried about contaminants in your drinking water? We offer a full complement of water filtration and sanitization technologies to remove sediment, reduce chemical contaminants, including lead, and get rid of off-tastes and odors. Depending on your local water quality, your Water Expert may recommend our NSF-certified carbon filtration, which works great for water with TDS (total dissolved solids) levels under 250 ppm (parts per million) or our NSF-certified reverse osmosis (RO) filtration, which is the standard for water with TDS levels over 250ppm.

Yes, Raleigh tap water is generally safe to drink and consistently meets or exceeds state and federal standards. The City of Raleigh monitors water quality closely and provides annual water quality reports confirming that drinking water is compliant with EPA guidelines. The city’s 2023 Annual Water Quality Report shows that all regulated contaminants are well within safe limits.
For businesses, especially those in older buildings, internal plumbing can sometimes affect water quality. Aging pipes and fixtures may introduce contaminants such as lead or cause changes in taste. Installing a Culligan Quench water cooler or sparkling water dispenser ensures your employees and customers have access to high-quality water for everyday refreshments.
No, Raleigh has soft water, with hardness levels averaging less than 2 grains per gallon. According to Raleigh’s 2023 Annual Water Quality Report, this falls into the soft category, meaning the water contains very low levels of calcium and magnesium minerals.
For businesses, soft water is beneficial because it reduces scale buildup in appliances like dishwashers, coffee makers, and water heaters. It also helps extend the lifespan of water-using equipment and minimizes maintenance costs. Culligan Quench filtration technology can help preserve Raleigh’s naturally soft water while further enhancing its taste and quality for your workplace.
Yes, Raleigh water contains chlorine. The city primarily uses chloramine, a chlorine and ammonia blend, for disinfection but switches to chlorine-only treatment once a year during maintenance. During this period, residents and businesses may notice a temporary chlorine taste or smell, though the water remains safe to drink and use. (City of Raleigh Water Reports).
While chlorine ensures water safety, it can sometimes affect taste and odor. For businesses in food service, healthcare, or office environments, providing filtered water can make a noticeable difference for employees and customers. Culligan Quench ice machines and sparkling water dispensers are equipped with advanced filtration that reduces chlorine taste and odor, ensuring your workplace has consistently fresh and great-tasting water.
Over 120,000 companies, big and small, trust Culligan Quench for cleaner, safer, and great-tasting water.
