Northern New Jersey water quality throughout the years

Now

Today, Newark still provides water to its residents from the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds. However, runoff from urban, suburban, and agricultural areas may compromise Northern New Jersey water quality. Like many older American cities, Newark continues to use the cast iron infrastructure originally installed in the 1800s. Older cast iron pipes are prone to corrosion and biofilm contamination from chemical reactions, which create clusters of pipe deterioration and bacteria, resulting in a “rotten egg” taste and smell.

According to the recent Northern New Jersey Water Quality report, the City of Newark detected an excess of lead in its drinking water due to the lead service lines. To combat this corrosion and bacteria growth, water departments continue to monitor levels as well as coat the lead pipes to prevent lead from corroding into Northern New Jersey tap water.

In May 1666, 30 Puritan families from New England landed on the banks of the Passaic River and established the settlement we now know as “Newark” in Northern New Jersey. The Passaic River and Orange Mountains provided an abundant water supply and drainage. In the early days, settlers would fill buckets at the “watering place” in the center of town. As the city grew, wooden pipes were built to distribute water to residents. Then, in the 1820s, the city replaced wood with cast iron pipes.

Newark’s population swelled during the late 1800s with the Industrial Revolution. Manufacturers producing cabinets, carriages, pottery, shoes, and soap opened alongside breweries, tanneries, and mills. Northern New Jersey soon became the principal industrial center in the nation. Unfortunately, this growth caused tremendous pollution in the Passaic River, forcing city engineers to find new sources of freshwater. The North Jersey District Water Supply Commission formed to develop an adequate, reliable municipal water supply. The commission identified the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds as abundant surface water sources.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Newark get its drinking water?

Newark’s primary water supply flows from the Pequannock Watershed, a 35,000-acre stretch of protected forestland that channels freshwater into the Pequannock River. That water is then treated at the Pequannock Water Treatment Plant, using a multi-barrier approach that includes filtration and disinfection. When needed, Newark supplements this supply with water from the Wanaque Reservoir.

However, the water still travels through miles of distribution lines before it reaches your faucet, and that journey can affect everything from taste to temperature.

That’s where tailored, in-office solutions come in. Businesses that want to elevate employee experience while reducing waste can turn to sparkling water dispensers and ice machines to round out their hydration stations.

Can you drink tap water in Newark?

While the city’s water treatment plants meet or exceed safety standards, the legacy of lead pipes continues to affect older infrastructure. In 2019, Newark instituted a nationally recognized program to replace over 23,000 lead lines by 2021, alongside upgrades to its corrosion control strategy.

If you’re in a newer building, odds are you’re in the clear. But in older commercial spaces built before the 1980s, it’s still possible for internal plumbing to impact water quality.

For businesses that want peace of mind, Culligan Quench’s bottleless water coolers are a practical solution. These systems filter out lead, chlorine and sediment while helping your team ditch single-use plastics for good.
