The French settled New Orleans on high ground next to the Mississippi River in 1718. Because the city was built on land only 14 feet above sea level, many parts of New Orleans flooded periodically. Water for drinking and general use was sourced from the Mississippi River and stored in earthenware jars. At that time, the city had no water purification or sterilization processes in place.
By 1893, city leaders realized that they needed to keep New Orleans drained dry, provided with clean drinking water, and kept clean with a proper sewage system. The New Orleans Drainage Commission was organized in 1896 to carry out a major drainage plan. By 1899, the Sewage and Water Board was tasked with constructing, operating, and maintaining a water treatment and distribution system. They were also charged with creating a sanitary sewage system.
Nowadays, New Orleans water quality is affected by the quality of water in the Mississippi River. Since this river is a surface water source, it’s susceptible to contamination from many different types of agricultural and industrial activity. Viruses and bacteria can enter municipal water from sewage treatment plants and septic systems. Still, New Orleans tap water is generally safe to drink, and water in the city meets national standards.
Hurricane Katrina was a catastrophic event that greatly impacted New Orleans water quality. Hurricane flooding affected water, sewer, and drainage systems. Though New Orleans water quality has improved since Katrina, the city continues to deal with water issues. In 2022, Louisiana tap water was ranked fourth in the nation for industrial water pollution.

Play videoNew Orleans has hard water. Water in the city generally measures around 138 parts per million (ppm), meaning there’s mineral content in the water in New Orleans that can create scale buildup in pipes and appliances, such as dishwashers. This can negatively impact the lifespan of plumbing and water-based appliances if you don’t mitigate the issue with filtration systems or water softeners. You can use point-of-use solutions or whole-business solutions.
While New Orleans tap water generally meets federal and state safety standards for drinking, aging infrastructure in the Crescent City may introduce contaminants into water as it moves through pipes. That can include lead.
NOLA has large swathes of pipe infrastructure installed before World War II. While the city is actively working to upgrade infrastructure and address lead pipe issues, these issues may be a concern for businesses and others for some time. Installing a bottle-free water cooler offers filtration opportunities to ensure you provide clean, safe and refreshing drinking water for employees and visitors.
During a boil water advisory, it’s essential to boil tap water for 1 minute or more before drinking or using it for cooking, brushing teeth or washing food. Avoid using ice made from or washing dishes with unboiled tap water.
Boil water advisories usually last a day or more. Local authorities typically have to make repairs or correct safety issues and test the water to ensure it’s safe again. During that time, watch local news channels and check the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans website for updates.
