Jackson water quality throughout the years

Today, the Jackson water system sources drinking water from the Pearl River and the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Jackson water quality is managed at two treatment plants. Reservoir water is treated at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant, and water from the Pearl River is treated at the J.H. Fewell Water Treatment Plant. Water is distributed to residents of Jackson via a system of more than 71,000 water connectors.

Jackson failed an EPA inspection in 2012 that resulted in a settlement that required the city to improve system maintenance. In 2022, a flood caused by severe storms impacted Jackson water quality, and a public health crisis was declared when Jackson tap water became unsafe to drink. The O.B. Curtis Water Treatment plant was unable to provide about 150,000 residents of Jackson with safe water due to damage caused by the flooding.

Though the EPA has lifted the state of emergency it declared and deemed water in the city safe to drink, some residents still question Jackson water quality. People living in Jackson are still dealing with contamination and discolored water. Jackson residents say they will continue to boil water and drink only bottled water until the city upgrades its outdated system.
