Generally, Londonderry tap water is safe to drink. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau works with the city’s public works to ensure that Londonderry water quality meets national standards. The city is required to report any issues with its water treatment and distribution systems to the bureau within 24 hours of a major event.

In 2021, Londonderry was plagued with water quality issues because of contaminants in local water sources. Londonderry water quality was affected by PFAS, which are synthetic organic compounds, leaking into groundwater supplies. The contaminants were traced to Saint-Gobain, a material manufacturing company that operates in the area. The city created a water task force and worked with the Department of Environmental Services to help address the issues.

Native Americans from the Algonquin people were the first settlers of the Londonderry area. They were attracted to the land because of the many different sources of surface water. Then, in June of 1722, sixteen families moved from a settlement in Haverhill, New Hampshire, and established the town charter for Londonderry.

Frequently asked questions

Is New Hampshire tap water safe to drink?

According to the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), the tap water in New Hampshire is safe to drink, thanks to the work of the NHDES Drinking Water and Groundwater Bureau (DWGB), which works to protect public health by providing reliable tap water. But even treated groundwater that passes state and federal standards can contain enough mineral deposits to change the quality and flavor of the water.

Manganese, iron, arsenic, fluoride, beryllium and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may be found in groundwater in and around Londonderry. Some of those compounds sneak through water treatment plan processes, but a work-based filtration system can provide further refinement on demand.

Why does New Hampshire have high levels of PFAS?

New Hampshire’s tap water contains high levels of harmful PFAS due to industrial and military activity in the area. PFAs are called “forever chemicals” because they’re difficult to get rid of once they’re in the environment or our bodies. Because PFAS are relatively new, local and federal legislators are still developing testing standards and treatment protocols.

In the meantime, you can protect yourself and your family with a bottleless water cooler that offers advanced filtration. Look for units that can filter out contaminants, like PFAS, microplastics and lead, often left behind by lower-quality coolers.
