Frequently asked questions

Is Indianapolis tap water safe to drink?

According to an Environmental Working Group (EWG) water quality report, tap water in Indianapolis is safe and meets federal drinking water standards. Although some contaminants were detected, including arsenic, chlorate, and nitrate, none were present in amounts in conflict with federal standards.

You can feel confident consuming tap water at home or work. But for extra peace of mind, it may be a good idea to explore options for point-of-use filtration systems. Culligan Quench’s water coolers offer advanced filtration and LED-UV technology to eliminate up to 99.9% of pesky viruses and bacteria.

Does Indianapolis have hard water?

Indianapolis tap water has a hardness rating of about 420 parts per million (ppm), which falls into the very hard water category. Experts say the city’s hard water is likely a result of the leaching and erosion of natural deposits increasing the presence of minerals in drinking water. Calcium and magnesium levels are particularly high.

While hard water isn’t necessarily unsafe, it may not taste the best. Using a water softener can help protect your plumbing and appliances from mineral buildup. For better-tasting drinking water, use a filtered water dispenser in your kitchen and office break room.
