Huntsville water quality throughout the years

Now
Then

Today, Huntsville has an extensive system of reservoirs, pump houses, and pipes that supply drinking water to residents and businesses throughout the city. Several wastewater treatment plants operated by the city collect, treat, and release wastewater back into local waterways. Huntsville residents rely on Lake Guntersville for its drinking water, which is located in the Tennessee River.

Microplastic levels in the Tennessee River are among the highest ever recorded, according to Professor of Geology and Hydrology Dr. Martin Knoll. The world’s oceans and freshwater sources have long been accumulating microplastics, or tiny bits of plastic less than five millimeters long, and a report after a 34-day swim in the Tennessee River found that it was among the most plastic polluted rivers on earth.

Huntsville settlers surely chose this location in the early 1800s thanks to the nearby Big Spring, the original water source that the city was built around. As the city grew, so too did its need for adequate drinking water. The Huntsville Waterworks was founded in the 1820s by Hunter Peel as Huntsville’s first waterworks.

As Huntsville Utilities explains, the Big Spring served as the main water source for this system. In the early days, logs hollowed out of cedar logs served as pipes, with a wooden tank serving as the reservoir. Since then, the city’s water system has grown significantly, and with it great improvements in Huntsville water quality. By 1838, the system included two new reservoirs, an additional pump house, and several miles of pipe. As the 19th century progressed, additional reservoirs and pumping stations were built.

Frequently asked questions

Is Huntsville, AL, tap water safe to drink?

Huntsville’s drinking water is treated with care — and lots of testing. Sourced from the Tennessee River and underground aquifers, it’s processed at local plants that monitor water quality around the clock. The latest Water Quality Report shows compliance with all state and federal guidelines, with no violations. Still, out of 80 potential contaminants, 11 were detected.

If you’re managing a busy workplace or facility in Huntsville and want to offer great-tasting water at every tap, switching to a bottle-free filtration system and getting a sparkling water dispenser is one simple way to elevate employee experience.

Does Huntsville have hard water?

Huntsville’s water tends to run moderately hard, thanks to the limestone-heavy geology across the Tennessee Valley. You may notice mineral spots on dishes, scale in pipes or stubborn soap scum that clings even after a deep clean. These minerals are safe to consume but can cause wear and tear on plumbing and equipment over time and may not taste great.

For offices or facilities looking to extend appliance lifespan, protect ice machines and elevate water quality, point-of-use systems make it easy to get ahead of the buildup.

Water you can trust. From experts you can trust.

Over 120,000 companies, big and small, trust Culligan Quench for cleaner, safer, and great-tasting water.
