In California’s Central Valley, water management and protection have always been a top priority. Early inhabitants relied on the many natural resources, living, traveling, and hunting along the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers of the Stockton Delta.
The discovery of gold in 1848 at the nearby Sutter’s Fort quickly changed the region, bringing an influx of gold seekers looking to strike it rich. Brackish water in the Delta became a serious issue after the development of agriculture in the upper Sacramento and San Joaquin Valley. Then droughts between 1910 and 1940 increased salinity because of the reduction of freshwater inflows.
The growing issue of Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto water quality led to the construction of dams on Central Valley rivers to boost dry-season freshwater. This eventually became the Central Valley Project, California’s first major water system, mostly built between the 1930s and the 1960s.
The project provided irrigation and municipal water to Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto by storing water in reservoirs in the north and transporting it south by way of canals, aqueducts, and plants.
A vital resource in hot, dry California, water reaches Sacramento residents by way of the Sacramento and American rivers and groundwater sources. Today, the system’s 13 million-acre feet of water in 20 reservoirs and passes about 7.4 million-acre feet annually through its canals.
An hour south through the Central Valley lies Stockton, where Californians can trace their tap water back to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the Mokelumne River, along with wells located throughout the region. Modesto residents, less than 35 miles to the south, draw their drinking water equally from surface and groundwater sources, including 79 wells and the Modesto Reservoir.
Whether utilizing water from the ground or at the surface, consumers can face any number of imperfections in Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto tap water. As water travels through the ground or over the land, it picks up naturally occurring minerals and animal or human pollution. This often compromises Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto Water Quality, causing a musty odor or taste, especially after construction or lots of rain.
