See how our bottleless water coolers compare.
In May 1666, 30 Puritan families from New England landed on the banks of the Passaic River and established the settlement we now know as “Newark” in Northern New Jersey. The Passaic River and Orange Mountains provided an abundant water supply and drainage. In the early days, settlers would fill buckets at the “watering place” in the center of town. As the city grew, wooden pipes were built to distribute water to residents. Then, in the 1820s, the city replaced wood with cast iron pipes.
Newark’s population swelled during the late 1800s with the Industrial Revolution. Manufacturers producing cabinets, carriages, pottery, shoes, and soap opened alongside breweries, tanneries, and mills. Northern New Jersey soon became the principal industrial center in the nation. Unfortunately, this growth caused tremendous pollution in the Passaic River, forcing city engineers to find new sources of freshwater. The North Jersey District Water Supply Commission formed to develop an adequate, reliable municipal water supply. The commission identified the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds as abundant surface water sources.
Today, Newark still provides water to its residents from the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds. However, runoff from urban, suburban, and agricultural areas may compromise Northern New Jersey water quality. Like many older American cities, Newark continues to use the cast iron infrastructure originally installed in the 1800s. Older cast iron pipes are prone to corrosion and biofilm contamination from chemical reactions, which create clusters of pipe deterioration and bacteria, resulting in a “rotten egg” taste and smell.
According to the recent Northern New Jersey Water Quality report, the City of Newark detected an excess of lead in its drinking water due to the lead service lines. To combat this corrosion and bacteria growth, water departments continue to monitor levels as well as coat the lead pipes to prevent lead from corroding into Northern New Jersey tap water.
