Located where the southern mouth of the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, the coastal region of Virginia Beach has provided ample access to water for centuries. A network of rivers and creeks served early inhabitants, from the native Chesepian cultures and later European settlers. Virginia Beach primarily remained an agricultural region until the late 1800s. New resorts and military facilities required a better infrastructure to supply residents with water. In the past, the Virginia Beach Public Utilities Department purchased its drinking water from Norfolk City. During droughts, however, this was limited to 30 million gallons per day (mgd).
Fast forward to 1997, and a pipeline carrying up to 45 mgd of water from Lake Gaston to Virginia Beach was installed. As a result, most residents north of the “Green Line” no longer had concerns about Virginia Beach water quality, but those south of the Transition Area still relied on groundwater.
Today, Virginia Beach, VA, is a coastal city located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Home to over 450,000 people, Virginia Beach has an extensive network of pipes and pumps that deliver high-quality drinking water to homes and businesses.
Located in Brunswick County, the Lake Gaston Water Supply Pipeline provides water to Virginia Beach residents via 76 miles of pipeline. Using Lake Gaston water as a starting point, Norfolk’s Moores Bridges Water Treatment Plant blends Lake Gaston water with Norfolk water.
Virginia Beach Water Quality is monitored by the Department of Public Utilities to ensure it complies with set standards. To remove particles, bacteria, algae, and other impurities, the water undergoes extensive filtration and disinfection. Although Virginia Beach tap water is treated to remove contaminants, this process doesn’t remove 100% successfully.
