Richmond water quality throughout the years

Today, Richmond’s water system delivers up to 132 million gallons per day to residents in Richmond and Henrico County. According to the Richmond Water Quality report, Richmond’s Department of Public Utilities treated an average of 62.1 MGD of water in 2019. Water treatment significantly reduces contamination in Richmond drinking water.

However, naturally occurring materials dissolve in water as it travels over land or through the ground, including minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material. In addition, Richmond water service lines still consist of older cast iron pipes, prone to corrosion and biofilm contamination. These chemical reactions create clusters of pipe deterioration and bacteria along the inside of the pipe, resulting in a “rotten egg” taste and smell.

In 1737, the first Richmond settlers drilled wells along the James River to supply water. But, like in many early American cities, residents of Richmond also dumped wastewater back into their water supply. As the city’s population grew, the river became overwhelmed with waste and the water wells began to produce contaminated water. In 1830, Richmond became the first U.S. city to utilize a sand filter system to purify water. Water was pumped from the James River and up 160 feet to the Marshall Reservoir. There, it slowly filtered through a layer of sand and then distributed throughout the city via a network of cast iron pipes.

While Richmond was the first U.S. city to filter its drinking water, the process did not produce uncontaminated drinking water, even when the city began chlorinating the water in 1917. A report at the time went so far as to say that Richmond’s “present water supply is unsafe.” The unsavory report prompted an upgrade of the whole system, including construction of a new water treatment plant on the banks of the James River, completed in 1924. To keep up with the growing water demand, city planners built additional reservoirs, including the “New Reservoir” and the Williams Dam.

Is Richmond tap water complying with federal/state standards?

Yes. Richmond’s tap water has reported 100% compliance with federal and state standards in recent years. However, residents sometimes worry about service interruptions from aging infrastructure, including boil-water notices and filter failures. Older buildings may also have lead or legacy plumbing. Occasional issues with fluoride dosing and delayed public notifications have raised trust concerns. If you’re concerned about the Richmond tap water, consider a Culligan Quench filtered drinking water system for your business.

What should I know about infrastructure risks, boil notices, or pressure loss in Richmond?

Richmond has experienced occasional boil notices, pressure drops, or filter-clogging issues due to aging infrastructure. Staying informed via city alerts and maintaining building plumbing can help mitigate risks.
