Louisville began as a series of settlements that sprang up at the Falls of the Ohio, which was a barrier to early river travel in the United States. Much of the city’s early growth came because of its location along the Ohio River, and by 1828, Louisville was an incorporated city and major shipping port.
The city’s population grew during the Civil War, and the Louisville Water Company was established in 1860 to help meet increasing water demands. Charles Hermany, the chief engineer of the waterworks, began filtering water from the Ohio River as a source of drinking water in 1866. Since then, the Louisville Water Company has become well known for its groundbreaking work in water filtration.
Today, the Louisville Water Company is still in charge of monitoring and maintaining Louisville water quality to ensure it meets EPA standards. The tap water in the city is safe to drink and for general use to cook, clean, and bathe. Louisville has a unique name for its tap water, Louisville Pure Tap, and the Louisville water quality was so good it was named “The Best Tasting Tap Water in the Country” in 2008 by The American Water Works Association.
Drinking water for the city of Louisville is mainly sourced from the Ohio River. The city is served by two water treatment plants, the Crescent Hill Water Treatment Plant and the B.E. Payne Water Treatment Plant. Louisville water quality is monitored daily, with scientists performing over 200 tests at the treatment plants and during the distribution process. Louisville water quality is easily impacted by industrial and agricultural activity since the city sources most of its drinking water from surface water. Though Louisville’s drinking water is within EPA standards, copper and lead have been found in tap water.
Over 120,000 companies, big and small, trust Culligan Quench for cleaner, safer, and great-tasting water.

Play videoLouisville tap water has a hardness level of 123 parts per million (PPM) or 7.2 grains per gallon (GPG). That indicates relatively hard water due to a higher concentration of minerals like magnesium and calcite. In most cases, these minerals aren’t harmful to your health. But they could lead to buildup in your pipes, and some people think hard water has a particularly strong aftertaste.
Use a water softener to prep hard water before using it around your house or at work. Water filtration stands and specialty ice machines can also help soften hard water to be used in drinks and cooking.
It’s safe to drink the tap water in Louisville. The city’s water treatment plants help clean up water pumped in from the nearby Ohio River. The Louisville Water Company then performs 200 tests every day to ensure quality and cleanliness. The result is high-quality drinking water delivered to area businesses, with water quality reports available to the public for the ultimate transparency.
Still, Louisville citizens with taste sensitivities or health concerns may want to take extra steps to ensure their drinking water is free of contaminants. A point-of-use water filtration system further cleans up water to remove PFAs, microplastics and lead, among other concerns. It’s better-tasting water, wherever and whenever you need it most.
Proudly providing businesses with clean, filtered drinking water in the greater Louisville Metro Area, including Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, Clark, Oldham, Henry, Meade, Harrison, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble, and Floyd counties in Kentucky.
